About FigureDesk

What FigureDesk is

FigureDesk is an independent, free set of calculators for real-world electrical, solar, battery, and backup-power questions — how many amps a load draws, how long a battery will run something, what size inverter or generator to buy, what wire gauge a circuit needs. It's built and maintained by one person, not a company, and it isn't trying to be a full electrical-engineering suite. The goal is a fast, accurate answer to the specific question you came with.

How the calculators are built

Every calculator on this site shows the formula it used, not just a number. Two kinds of math run under the hood: universal physics relationships that don't depend on any external table — Ohm's law, Joule's law, the kVA/kW/power-factor relationship, watts-to-amps conversions — and calculations that depend on a value only you know, like your battery's depth of discharge or your inverter's rated efficiency. FigureDesk deliberately does not invent a default for that second kind. If a calculator asks you for a number instead of assuming one, that's intentional — a guessed default that happens to be wrong is worse than a form that asks one more question.

Where a calculator does rely on an external, standards-derived data table (wire ampacity, conductor resistance, NEC-tabulated values), that table is only shipped once it's been sourced to a named standard, edition, and table number — not transcribed from memory or an AI-generated guess. Some planned calculators are still waiting on that sourcing step before they ship; see the calculators that are live today at /calculators.

What FigureDesk is not

FigureDesk is not a licensed electrician, engineer, or an electrical code authority, and it doesn't claim to be. Every result is advisory — see the disclaimer on every calculator page and below. There is no account system, no paid tier, and no data sold to anyone.

FigureDesk results are advisory and do not replace a licensed electrician, a qualified engineer, or the applicable local electrical code. Verify any electrical work against your local code and with a qualified professional before relying on it.
